Rankings for the Top 10 Hotels in Jamaica, were computed using customer reviews from Google Maps, Booking.com & Expedia.com. Customer review data were collected between July 16th & 18th, 2020.
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted Jamaica’s tourism industry, notwithstanding, the country remains resilient despite several challenges. In this context, we believe it’s an opportune time to highlight our top hotels based on customer reviews (from Google Maps, Booking.com & Expedia.com). We know you’ll find the information useful, so try to support your favorite Jamaican hotel (many of whom didn’t make our list).

Methodology
Google Maps: To formulate our ranking, we first created a list of 60 Jamaican Hotels across all 14 parishes. This initial list of 60 hotels were trimmed based on total number of reviews. That is, only hotels with 1,067 reviews or more were selected to be ranked. The third and final stage involved ranking hotels based on their star rating & total number of reviews. Therefore, if two hotels have the same star rating, the hotel with more reviews would be ranked higher i.e. placed in a better position.
Why 1,067? In sampling methodology, a sample size of 1,067 or more is usually considered representative of most large population (margin of error +/- 3% at the 95% Confidence Level). Therefore, we believe a sample of Google Maps reviewers greater than 1,067 would be a good representation of visitors’ experience and thus fairly comparable across hotels.
Booking.com: To formulate our ranking, we first created a list of 60 Jamaican Hotels across all 14 parishes. This initial list of 60 hotels, were trimmed based on total number of reviews. That is, only hotels with 200 or more reviews would be considered for the Top 10 ranking (the total number of reviews were much smaller on this platform compared to Google Maps, but since booking.com reviews are verified customers, we believe a smaller sample of reviews is still sufficient). The third and final stage involved ranking hotels based on their star rating & total number of reviews. Therefore, if two hotels have the same star rating, the hotel with more reviews would be ranked higher i.e. placed in a better position.

Thanks, we thought about doing the overall but decided against it given the idiosyncrasies across platforms. e.g. we used different sample sizes, thus the methodology is slightly different across each.
